Are your valuables covered by your household insurance if they are in open areas?

December is here and for many of us that means locking up our homes for a few weeks while we go on holiday. Before you go, however, it’s important to make sure that you know what household valuables are covered by your insurance policy, as you may have to lock up any valuables that are not covered. Items you should double-check are covered include but not limited to expensive outdoor gas braais and patio sets.

Most insurance policies offer cover for valuables that are out in the open under your household contents. It is important to note, however, that this is usually limited to a certain amount, which will be specified in your specific policy. Household valuables that can be left in the open should be the items that are durable enough to withstand most weather conditions, meaning that the biggest risk that they would face would be theft.

By confirming which of your outdoor household valuables are covered by your insurance policy and correctly storing away the items that are not covered, you will prevent the unpleasant surprise of discovering upon returning home from your holiday, that a cherished valuable which is not covered, has been damaged.
